Mercato Centrale Roma {Where to Eat in Termini Station}

A trip to Rome probably means a trip to Termini station. This is a place that I really used to work hard to avoid. Slowly over the past few years train travel in Italy has gotten more convenient and now I actually go to Termini on purpose. Sometime for a reason that has absolutely nothing to do with trains.

The reason for the non train journey visits to Termini you ask? They are because of the Mercato Centrale.
The Mercato Centrale, which opened in October, is the talk of the town. Justifiably so. The space is spectacular and the food is fantastic.

It is a little tricky to find because it is not directly connected to the station. I like to walk through the COIN department store (which by the way has a great cosmetics and accessories selection) but you can also walk outside along the via Giolitti.

Once you find it the selection is so varied that is can be overwhelming. There is Bonci pizza, bread and pastries, Sicilian arancici and savory pies from Ara, cheese from Beppe, Trappizzino, an artichoke stand, juice bar, gelateria,

burgers, pizza, pasta, a butcher and a fishmonger. There is a wine bar and beer bar and a coffee bar which serves a really excellent cup of coffee.

I recommend repeat visits so you can try square savory Sicilian pies, plates of braised Roman artichokes, meatball Trapizzzinos and a cold IPA. I haven't loved everything I tried; The Chianina hamburger is a little dry and the chips underdone and the lemon meringue tarts from Cremilla were a not tart enough for me.

So if you are traveling to Rome make sure you schedule time, and your appetite, for a visit to the Mercato Centrale.
