Ceramiche Sberna in Deruta {Shopping in Italy}
It is wedding season. And if you are an expat, it is home leave season. That means it is the season to buy gifts. When we visit friends and family I have a general policy that I only bring gifts that can be consumed. My suitcase is filled with beautifully packaged Italian toothpaste and coffee and pasta. This year I am thinking about bringing something a little more durable.
My pal Elizabeth literally wrote the book on ceramics in Deruta so when she gives advice I listen. Mark and I made the short drive from her Umbrian country house to the friendly and colorful Ceramiche Sberna in Deruta.
The space at Sberna is vast with sections filled with various patterns, some of which date back to Renaissance days. One of the sisters will help you or leave you to wander as you wish. My favorite part of the store is in a far back corner where the overruns and seconds are stacked. I love to browse through the stacks of mismatched platters and plates and mugs where I always manage to find something that I think is missing from my eclectic collection.
Ceramiche Sberna can pack your purchases for travel or ship them directly to your destination. Deruta is an easy day trip from Rome.
