Old Friends in Ancient Places {Flavio al Velavevodetto}

It is a busy time of year for Dear Husband. One positive that usually comes out of this crazy conference schedule is the opportunity to see old friends from posts past.

This past weekend was a Harare reunion with people we have known since our first days in Zimbabwe. Some now based here in Rome, others now living in Nairobi and Zanzibar and Johannesburg.

The request from the group was for something not too far from FAO, and traditionally Roman. I remembered my pal Kevin had produced a fantastic list before his departure from Rome (and I know from experience his recommendations are always spot on)

Flavio Valevevodetto it was.

We arrived on the earlyish side (one friend has just spent three months in the states and had forgotten about Roman dinner hours) We had the place to ourselves to roam the open wine selection and take in the ancient pottery shards.

The place filled up with boisterous Romans and all of our party finally arrived and we caught up on years of news of friends and children and places we have all been living.

And we ate very well.

You go and pick your own wine off the shelf

Traditional Roman Coda alla vaccinara
Ravioli alla Velavevodetto
Smokey and tomatoey amatriciana
Quite possibly the best tiramisu in Rome

  1. This was one of my favorite meals when I visited Rome last year. I'm still dreaming about the caccio et pepe. And now I know to order the tiramisu!
